Don't ever remove more than one-third of the total canopy any one year. Nor should you start pruning a yew shrub by removing an entire section of its foliage. Instead, when you are pruning yew bushes, snip a little on all sides of each yew to keep it natural looking and healthy.

Can yews be cut back hard?

You can prune healthy yews (Taxus spp.) back quite severely with no problem. You can easily reduce their size by one-half to three-quarters. Such severe pruning is best done in early spring so they have spring and summer to recover.

A hollow yew is able to regenerate itself by producing new roots from its centre. These roots grow down into the ground to feed and strengthen the ageing tree, stabilising it and prolonging its survival, enabling the tree to continue life long after many other trees would have perished.

These plants are tolerant of many conditions, from drought and shade to sun and moist soil. With a little annual maintenance, you can keep these shrubs shaped into all sorts of different designs. Just be careful planting these around small children and animals because most parts of yews are poisonous if ingested.

Can I prune a yew in October?

Start pruning yews in late March or early April. If the yews are growing vigorously, you may need to prune them again in late June. Avoid pruning yews in the fall, as this will make them more vulnerable to winter weather.

Can I trim a yew hedge in November?

The safest time of year to trim yews is during dormancy in late winter or early spring before the growing season begins. You can also perform a light trim in late summer after the growing season has ended. Trimming at the wrong time of year can lead to unwanted growth.
