Variegated

Variegated
Variegation is a term that is used rather loosely in the plant world. When it comes down to it, any plant displaying multiple colors can be called variegated. The word Variegated comes from the latin word variegatus, which means “made of various sorts or colors.”
What makes something variegated?
Variegation is caused by mutations that affect chlorophyll production or by viruses, such as mosaic viruses, which have been studied by scientists. The striking look of variegated plants is desired by many gardeners, and some have deliberately tried to induce it for aesthetic purposes.

How are plants variegated?
Why are some plants variegated? A. Variation in leaf colour occurs because of a lack of the green pigment chlorophyll in some of the plant cells. It is usually the result of a cell mutation.
Can you make a normal plant variegated?
Technically, yes, a plant can be forced to variegate. However, the process might be hazardous to the plant and the plant's owner. One would need to create a mutation or introduce a virus to the plant to force variegation.
How do you Variegate a plant at home?
The more traditional and stable way to achieve variegation is to take cuttings of the branches that have more blotchy variegation in the leaf rather than the all-white form (has no chlorophyll) and just keep building the numbers of plants. This process takes a lot longer to produce volume.
Why are variegated plants more expensive?
Essentially variegated plants have less surface area to photosynthesise with and produce the sugars they need for growth and repair, hence they usually need more light compared to entirely green plants and typically grow much, much slower. This is the basis of why they are currently so sought after and pricy!
Is variegation a genetic trait?
Leaf variegation has long been known as a recessive genetic trait in higher plants. Unlike albino mutants, leaf-variegated mutants are non-lethal and thus enable us to study a novel mechanism of plastid development and maintenance.
What plants are naturally variegated?
Some popular indoor plants and cultivars with natural variegation include the Magenta Triostar, Silver Evergreen, Snake Plant, and Pink Rubber Tree. Chimeral variegation - This type of variegation is caused by genetic mutation where some tissue of the plant is able to produce chlorophyll and other tissue is not.
Do all variegated plants revert?
Redeveloping variegation is not possible for most plants. Once they have reverted completely there is a less than 1% chance of it developing variegated foliage again. It's a rare phenomenon and impossible to replicate. However, some plants are an exception, like the Pink Princess Philodendron.
Can a plant cutting become variegated?
A variegated variety will produce variegated plants from leaf cuttings, even if the leaf rooted is green. We've also found that it helps not to keep the rooting mix too wet. Heavily variegated plantlets are much more susceptible to rotting than are green-leaved ones.
Are variegated plants good?
Weaker growth/Failure to thrive. In fact, some variegated plants don't do as well as their unvariegated counterparts. Because variegated leaf sections don't have the chlorophyll of green sections, photosynthesis is typically less efficient, and many variegated plants show weaker growth.
Can a green leaf become variegated?
White or variegated leaves are not as robust as green ones. They need more light to compensate for the lack of chlorophyll, which is needed for photosynthesis, the turning of light into energy. Your all-green leaves will not turn variegated.
Can you turn to Monstera to variegated?
According to Plantophiles, the chance of having a plant randomly produce variegation is about 1:100,000. If you do the math, to get a variegated monstera deliciosa means you have to make 100,000 cuttings and make new plants, on average. It's possible, but not highly likely.
Can you make a Monstera variegated?
You can promote more variegation in a Monstera Variegata by placing your plant in a spot with more sunlight. The darker it is in the room, the more green leaves are produced. The brighter it is (near a south-facing window, for instance), the more variegation the plant will put out in its leaves.
How do you encourage plant variegation?
Place the plant in full sun to encourage variegation. Variegated plants need more sun than solid green plants because they don't have as much chlorophyll to absorb sunlight. If you're growing a variegated plant, leave it near a sunny window or a bright spot on your property so it absorbs enough sun to stay healthy.
Why is my plant becoming variegated?
Answer: Variation in leaf color arises because of a lack of the green pigment chlorophyll in some of the plant cells. It isn't an adaptation to the environment, but instead it is usually the result of a cell mutation, and can be inherited (genetic) or occur randomly (chimeric).
Why is my variegated plant turning green?
Reversion - It's when your variegated plant start to produce new growth which lacks the variegated parts or when variegation reverts back to green. This usually occurs as a result of the plant not receiving enough sunlight.
What plant is worth the most money?
Shenzhen Nongke Orchid When the Shenzhen Nongke Orchid sold at auction for roughly $224,000 in 2005, it set the record for the most expensive flowering plant ever sold. It took eight years for scientists to develop this blossom in a university lab. Only every five years does it blossom.
