The snow plant is rare and is protected by law. There is a heavy fine for picking or otherwise disturbing any one of these rare beauties. The snow plant (Sarcodes sanguinea) is more admired by tourists than any other plant in California. It is red, fleshy, and watery; and looks like a giganitic asparagus shoot.

Why is it called snow plant?

The term Snow Plant seems more mysterious - perhaps, you may be thinking, it arises because the plant is the color of snow over which a bear has just vivisected an unwary tourist - but it actually derives from Snow Plant's tendency to emerge early in the spring, just after (and occasionally during) snowmelt.

Is snow plant a mushroom?

Although often confused as a mushroom, a snow plant is in fact a plant. It produces flowers and is pollinated by many different animals including hummingbirds.

Where do snow plants grow?

They usually grow in colonies. California can nearly claim the snow plant as its own – they're mostly found in conifer forests in the state.

Very striking in appearance, tropic snow is also quite toxic to dogs and small animals as it contains insoluble calcium oxalates. Tropic snow poisoning is the direct result of dogs consuming quantities of the tropic snow plant, commonly known as dumb cane.

How do you take care of a snow plant?

Snow Bush likes consistently moist soil but does not tolerate wet soil. Let the water dry from the soil to the until about half of the soil feels dry. Water it immediately after you have made this discovery, let the excess water drain, and place the plant back into its cover pot or saucer.

Can you grow snow plant?

It is also easy to grow snow-in-summer from seed. Simply sow the seed directly into your flowerbeds in early spring, and loosely cover with about 1/8-inch garden or potting soil. Germination should occur in two to three weeks. New plants won't bloom until their second year.
