White bumps on plant stems

These strange bumps can be called “galls.” They grow in response to tiny insects, and they're very common. Through the process of photosynthesis, trees produce sugars which get stored in their leaves, stems, and trunks. Some insects take advantage of those sugars by feeding on them.

How do I get rid of the white stuff on my plant stems?

Use vinegar. Vinegar is a proven method for destroying mold and eliminating pesky white spots from your plants. Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a quart of water, and spray onto your infected leaves and stems. Repeat every few days until all traces of mold are gone.

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that results in a powdery gray or white coating on the leaves and stems of infected plants. It starts out as a few spores on the leaves, and quickly spreads, eventually yellowing the leaves and causing premature leaf drop.

How did my plant get mealybugs?

They come from warmer climates and can come into your home (or outdoor plants) by bringing home infested plants from a nursery. They spread from plant to plant and feed off of growth points. They are white, tiny little guys that form cottony nests where they are feeding. They can even live in the roots.

What does a mealybug look like?

Mealybugs have pinkish-purple bodies but often appear white or light gray once they cover themselves in a cotton-like wax. They vary in size from 1/20 - 1/5 of an inch long. Their oval-shaped bodies look like they have many legs around them, but this is actually part of their protective waxy coating.

What does a spider mite look like?

The mites themselves are oval in shape, slightly bristled, and pale green as juveniles with distinct dark green spots as they mature. These green dots are actually the contents of their gut and what gives the two-spotted spider mite its name.

What does stem rot look like?

Spots of various sizes occur on the stem, at or near the soil level and on the roots. These spots may vary in color from gray, brown, black, or even bright red. Frequently, these fungi cause the tips of fibrous roots to decay. Wilting, dieback, and poor vigor are common symptoms.

What do aphids look like?

Aphids are small, 1/16- to 1/8-inch-long (2-4 mm), pear-shaped, soft-bodied insects. They can range in color from green, black, red, yellow, brown or gray. Mature aphids can be wingless or can have wings. Winged aphids are similar in color but are a little darker.

Can you use dawn to get rid of mealybugs?

Mix 1 cup of rubbing alcohol with few drops of Dawn dish soap and 1 quart (32oz) of water. Pour the solution in the spray bottle. Spray the whole plant, not only where mealybugs are visible. Spray leaves well, top, and under and stems.

Will mealy bugs ever go away?

It may take weeks or even months of constant vigilance to end your mealybug woes. Even if you don't see any on the plant, they are tiny, so they can't really be seen unless there's a lot of them; that, and they may emerge from crevices and hiding spots from the area around the plant just when you think they're gone.

Can plants recover from mealybugs?

The mealy situations mentioned above are bearable, and plants such as these will most likely recover quickly with a little assistance. Other times though, the plant can be so infested and damaged, that it's best to just KILL IT WITH FIRE!

The first thing you're likely to notice is patterns of silvery dots or stippling on the leaves of your plant. Looking closer, you will see small, delicate webs in corners of stems or underneath leaves with what look like tiny white dots scattered throughout. Those are spider mites!
